Stressed-Out Skin? Try These DIY Facials

nails:facialI know; it’s grim.  The economy is bleak.  Unless you own your own company, things are tough. Prices are up, while salaries are down.  You wake up every morning, work hard and put in as much as your brain can handle, only to wake up and do it again the next day.  I get it, you’re stressed…every which way from Sunday.  And if you’re like me, it can prove to be a bit too much and begin to affect your physical health, in terms of your joints, weight and skin.  Turns out, when you get stressed, your body produces cortisol, a stress hormone, that can increase oil production in people, causing skin problems, such as acne, skin sensitivity or dryness.

I know, I know…I don’t have much time to keep track of this stuff either…I work all day, come home, make dinner, do homework with my kid…there’s little time to take a breath.  And I’m lucky to get a haircut in every three months (yes, I will admit, the last haircut I fit in was in the beginning of December).  So, when I say that it’s tough to keep my skin clean and halfway wrinkle-free, it’s not by using products via Saks Fifth Avenue or Nordstrom.  Yes, I will admit, Clinique has a great  three-step line is reasonably-priced and adaptable to any skin type, and I’ve used it for years.  You do need to use three steps when cleaning your face: cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturize.  If you aren’t doing those steps, start off with the basics before moving onto anything else.

If you already know about the basics, sometimes your skin just needs a little “oomph,” a little push, to get back on the gorgeous track.  And for us girls who can’t afford to spend five hundred dollars for that “oomph,” I’ve found a few ways for you to do a homemade facial (according to skin type) to get your skin back to looking fab.

1.   Avocado Mash Up (For dry skin): avocado dark

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1 egg white
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (you can find this at your local health food store)

Thoroughly mix avocado, a beaten egg white, olive oil and apple cider vinegar.  Leave on for 15 minutes and rinse.

2.  Berry-Yogurt Mask (For sensitive skin):

  • 2 tablespoons plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1/4 cup mixed berries
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Mix plain yogurt and honey, and pulse in blender.  Add berries and puree until a smooth combination, and add lemon juice.  Use hands to apply to face, leave on for 10-15 minutes and rinse.

3.  Strawberry, Honey and Lemon Acne Mask (For oily skin):  

  • 6 fresh strawberries
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugarstrawberries
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

De-stem and cut strawberries into small pieces.  Mash into a pulp and place into small bowl.

Add lemon juice, brown sugar and honey. Stir until combined.  Apply for 10 minutes and remove with warm washcloth.

Take a break, put your feet up, and relax for a bit while nature does its magic.  You’ll be amazed at how little it costs to get your skin back to zen.
